June 6, 2016 Travel day to Valdez, AK

Monday, June 6, 2016 Travel day to Valdez, AK

We had a wonderful breakfast made by the campground and served by the owners.  We told the owners that we really enjoyed our one night stay and if given a chance we will stop again and share his campground with everyone we know.

We also said our goodbyes to Jim and Terry but we are going to meet up with them in 10 days.
The road from Tok to the junction of the Richardson Highway which is about 120 miles was pretty rough but not as bad as it was to Tok the other day. It only took us 3 hours. Once we turned onto the Richardson Highway which leads us to Valdez the road improved but you still had to watch for areas where the road is uneven. The scenery was pretty bland for the first 100 miles and then it started to change and the last 40 miles were a big surprise. As we approached Thompson Pass we could see Worthington Glacier. It was fairly close to the road and we are planning on returning to get a closer look on one of our off days. The Wrangel-St Elias mountain range in this area holds 9 of the 16 tallest peaks in the US. As we traveled past the pass we entered Keystone Canyon where we saw numerous beautiful waterfalls.

We arrived at our Bear Paw RV Park and got all set up in time to walk to a neighboring RV Park (Bayside) where they feed Eagles from 5 to 5:30 until mid June. They cut up herring and have one area in their parking lot where over a dozen Bald Eagles fly in to enjoy the free food. It was amazing because this is not a show but real wild eagles.
