September 15, 2015 Tour of Long House and a ride in a tow truck

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 Tour of Long House and a ride in a tow truck

It rained most of the night so we weren't sure if there was going to be on a tour today.  We still left at 730 as our tour was at 930 am.  When we got to the top the sun was out and you could barley tell that it had rained at all.  We had a 3/4  mile hike on a paved road before we got to the trail that would take us down to the house.  The trail down was another 1/2 mile and it was getting quite warm.

This house was much bigger than the rest and we got some more history about these ancestral pueblos (Anasazi).  In this house there may have been about 175 people living here at one time.  The alcove is 298 feet long, has 150 rooms, 21 kivas and a row of storage rooms up above.  It also had a large open space that may have been used as a big kiva for huge ceremonial feasts. There was even a foot drum.  This was a rectangular shaped hole in the ground and they would put animal skins over it and drum on it with their feet.   There was a seep spring in this house also and they had a great way of collecting water as you will see by the pictures.  After walking through this house we headed back up to the top.  The bad part of this was walking up the 52 stairs.  As we got up on the top of the mesa we ran into a small group of feral horses.  Got some pretty good pictures of the stallion and a mare and her foal.

Now for the worst ending to our great day.  We were about 20 miles from the entrance to the park going up and down hills and around u turns and switchbacks and our car DIED!!! Yep the car died. Some nice person stopped and notified the park rangers cause cell phones don't work in this part of the park and the rangers even called a tow truck for us.  After about 3 hours of waiting the tow truck finally arrived and the car was towed to the shop.  We won't know till tomorrow morning what the issue is.  Got my fingers crossed that it isn't anything major.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR YOUNGEST GRAND DAUGHTER, AUBREY GRACE MCPEEK. SHE IS 10 YEARS OLD TODAY.
