September 5 & 6, 2015 Travel day to the Grand Canyon and driving around the South Rim

Saturday, Sept 5 and Sunday, Sept 6, 2015  Travel day to the Grand Canyon

Well the air conditioner has bit the dust and lucky for us it is much cooler as we approach the Grand Canyon.  We had to make a stop at Camping World near Flagstaff to pick up the motor for the AC and then we continued to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.  We are staying inside the park at Trailer Village RV Park.  We started to go exploring but a storm came up and we decided that we needed to stay at the motorhome.  After the storm passed Mike decided to start prepping the AC.

Sunday, September 6 , 2012 Driving around the South Rim

Well the temperature was on the cool side last night that we had to close all of the windows.  It got down into the high 40's which was perfect for us without our AC.

We were up on the early side so we decided to go to the South Rim and walk around and then drive up the road a piece to see what has changed since the last time that we were here in 2007.  The canyon is a majestic as ever.  The colors changed every time you look at it.  They have made improvements to the grounds.  What we have noticed is that the forest floor is very clean by that I mean it looks like it has been raked and all of the dried underbrush has been removed.  Maybe this is a way of preventing forest fires from spreading.   We didn't see any wild animals except a fat squirrel.  I did hear a coyote early this morning.

Here's some information on the buildings in the pictures.

The Lookout was built in 1914 and was designed by Mary Colter for people to gaze upon the canyon and purchases souvenir's & postcards, which we did.

El Tovar Hotel built in 1905 and catered to the wealthy.  Can you imagine paying $4.50 and up a night and you even got hot and cold running water.

Hopi House built in 1905 by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter.  It was unusual for a women back then to be an architect.  She done an outstanding job with her vision in designing these buildigs.

Bright Angel Lodge was built in 1935 on the direction again of Mary Colter.  The wooden thunderbird in the lobby of the lodge is called Colter's "Bright Angel".
