July 21, 2015 Arrival at Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park and short trip into Yellowstone

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 Arrival at Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park and short trip into Yellowstone

Believe it or not Mike and I were both up fairly early and on the road by 715 am.  We wanted to find a Home Depot or hardware store to get the part to fix the sink.  It wasn’t anything major but a hose had busted.  We think that with all of the elevation changes it split.  We found an Ace Hardware store just a few miles down the road but they didn’t open until 8 but the manager arrived and took Mike in the store gave him the hose and sent us on our way.  Nice small town hospitality!  Thank You, Ace Hardware in Butte, MT.

We were finally on our way.  The mountains, ranches and the wide open ranges were beautiful.  I can see why they call Montana the Big Sky country.  It is wide open. We did not eat any breakfast so when we arrived in Bozeman, MT to fuel and to leave I-90 to head down highway 191 to Yellowstone we picked up a couple of huge Cinnamon Buns. The breakfast of travelers.

We arrived at Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone around 11.  What a beautiful park.  The sites are level and our well manicured.  It is very clean with water, electricity and sewage.  This park is just 4 blocks from the entrance to Yellowstone on the west side.  Amy and Jeff arrived shortly after and we went into the park for the afternoon.

They had not done much sightseeing in the park the 2 days before we arrived hoping that we would still join them. So we started with some of the stuff they had not seen. The park has a couple of loop roads but they are long in between connection points. We hit a few of the minor sites on our way to the big one “Old Faithfull”. We just missed the eruption by a few minutes so we had to wait another hour and a half for the next one. We were not disappointed it was just like you see in all of the documentaries.

How did Yellowstone get its name? It was named after the Yellowstone River the biggest river that runs through the park. The river got its name from the native Indian name which the French trappers translated into French as “Roche Jaune” which is Yellow Rock. Then Lewis and Clark used the French and the English translation of “Yellow Stone” and it was subsequently formalized as Yellowstone.

Happy Birthday, Dad. We know you are gone but you would have really enjoyed this trip.

Happy Birthday, Dana. We hope you had a great day. Sorry we weren't there.
