Wednesday, August 12, 2015 Trip to Antelope Island in Great Salt Lake
Today we didn't get started until noon. We decided to go check out Antelope Island which is the biggest island in the Great Salt Lake. It is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. It is 75 miles long and it is 28 miles wide. The deepest part is only 33 feet deep. Water comes into the lake by 4 different rivers but has no way of leaving. The only way it leaves is by evaporation. The water has so much salt in it that the only thing that survives in this water is brine shrimp and some algae. Mike and I walked down to the water and the smell was not very pleasant. I definitely did not want to put my feet in this water!
We rode around the island to see what wildlife we could capture. We saw some swallows, herd of buffalo, horses, pronghorn antelope and 3 Great Horned Owls that we found in a hay barn. Lucky us.
