Sunday, August 23, 2015 Drive to Bryce Canyon and a trip into the park
We got on the road about 8am and we had heard that Route 12
was the scenic way to go. We did our
research and couldn’t see anything wrong with this path. The Winnebago Caravans do this so there isn’t
any reason why we couldn’t. The first
40-50 miles were great. A free range cow
jumped out of the trees but stayed on the side of the road but that was all the
excitement we had till we got to the ridge and then things for me got a little
scary.
It was a 2 lane highway with a little and I mean little
shoulder running on top of the ridge line.
If you looked to the right (my side) there was a very deep canyon and then
you looked to the other side and there was another deep canyon. Jeff and Amy this was just as scary as
Jalama!! LOL. We took our time and made it through the next
10 miles without any problems but I am glad that it is behind us. The colors are changing from a clay red to a orangish color then to pink. We made it to Ruby’s Inn RV Park in Bryce Canyon City. This is a
very nice park and they have everything.
We found our site. It was in the
very back (new section) and the site is so big that we could have fit 2 RV’s
and still have room.
The entrance to Bryce Canyon was only 1 mile away. From the gate to the furthest most point was
18 miles and we made 9 stops along the way to see the views. Bryce so far has been the most picturesque
place we have been in the state of Utah. When we got back to home base we planned out
our hikes and seeing that we are at 7600 feet above sea level we are only going to do 1 hike a
day and we are not going to do much elevation change either.
FYI- The formations that you see in Bryce are called hoodoos. Hoodoos is a rock pinnacle with a cap on it. The cap is made up of limestone and magnesium which protects it from erosion. Eventually they will collapse due to the softer material eroding away. That is why Bryce's landscape is always changing.
