August 4, 2015 Day trip to Thayne, WY- A Coast to Coast Park Near Grand Tetons

Tuesday, August 4, 2015 Day trip to Thayne, WY- A Coast to Coast Park Near Grand Tetons

Today was a leisurely drive of 3 hours to Thayne, WY.  At first our drive was kind of boring just seeing flat land and then the mountains came into view.  When we got onto  Highway 26  we passed a huge body of water called the Palisades Reservoir.  This is the biggest reservoir I had ever seen. They say that it covers 70 miles of shoreline and 16,000 surface acres.  It is a gorgeous reservoir.

This Coast to Coast Park (Star Valley Ranch Resort) is about 50 miles from Jackson, WY. This will be our base for the next 4 days. This campground has over 800 sites.  Nice pull through lots with full hookups, dog parks for little and big dogs and a lot of extras.  Pretty good for $10.00 a night. We could have stayed closer to the Grand Teton National Park and make shorter trips but we are trying to save a few dollars so we have decided to stay at Military Bases, Coast to Coast Parks or use Passport America which average us about $15 a night and make the longer drives to see the sights. We are comparing costs between these different camping programs and the closer commercial campgrounds. Also adding our fuel costs for the longer day trips to see if the savings is worth it.   We will let everyone know the end results of this comparison.

We didn't want to go into the Grand Tetons today so we took a short trip into the town of Afton to stop off at the Visitor's Center for some booklets and then to see their Elkhorn Arch.

This arch was constructed in 1958 and is the world's largest elkhorn arch.  It contains over 15 tons of antlers which equates to 3011 horns.    It is 24 feet at its highest point and crosses Highway 89 for 75 feet.  It is very impressive.
