August 21, 2015 Hiking trails in Capitol Reef National Park

Friday, August 21, 2015 Hiking trails in Capitol Reef National Park

Today started out on a good note.  We had fresh muffins made by the campground.  It was nice not having to cook breakfast this morning.  We headed out to do our hikes.  We were going to do one but changed our minds and decided to do 2 hikes.

Our first hike was to Cassidy Arch.  Mike thought that this hike was a moderate hike...wrong it turned out to be a strenuous one.  It had an elevation change of over 500 feet and it was 1.5 miles one way.  Most of it was in the sun but it was a good hike.  We made good time going up in an hour and coming back down in 45 minutes.  We felt pretty good so we decided to do another one .

The second hike was to Hickman Bridge.  This was a 2 mile hike with a 400 foot elevation change.  This was a 133 foot natural bridge.  Unfortunately I only made it up the trail about .5 mile and I couldn't go anymore.  Mike wanted to go to the top so off he went and I went back to the car to wait on him.  I guess I bit off more than I could handle.  It could have been due to the elevation which is over 6800 feet or that strenuous hike earlier took more out of me than I thought.  Mike made it back within 45 minutes and he stated that I wouldn't have made it as tired as I was but he was ready to go home and rest for the rest of the afternoon.  As the afternoon progressed I decided that I would rest tomorrow and not do any more hikes.  I guess strenuous means just that.

Our campground is Thousand Lakes RV Park and is very nice.  They have shade trees, level spots and a lot of amenities.  They offer muffins in the morning and dinners cooked to order in the evenings.  They also have a fantastic store and the prices were great and not as expensive as other campgrounds.  If you are ever in this area this is the place to stay.

Just want to mention that some of the pictures that we have taken are a bit foggy.  It is smoke that has come into Utah due to all the fires that are in the surrounding states.

Tomorrow we are just planning on hanging out at the campground and do some chores, like laundry and plan out our time in Bryce Canyon which is our next stop.
