Thursday, August 20, 2015 Drive to Torrey, UT and short trip into Capitol Reef
The trip to Torrey was a quick 3.5 hours. The weather was fairly cool (in the 60's) and there wasn't that many cars on the road. We arrived at our campground, Thousand Lakes RV Park, early but our site was open so we checked in and got setup. We had lunch and then off to Capitol Reef Visitors Center to see what we would like to see.
We stopped at the Visitor's Center and got some brochures and then we went out to investigate the park. We went by an old schoolhouse, saw some petroglyphs, went to an orchard and picked some fresh fruit. These fruit trees are the remnants of a pioneer community of Fruita that settled here in the 1880's. Stopped off at the Gifford House which was also part of the Mormon settlement of Fruita and enjoyed some homemade ice cream and we bought a small apple and wild berry pie to go with dinner tonight. We took a 10 mile scenic drive and enjoyed the scenery all around us. It is amazing that we are only a short distance from Arches and Canyonlands but the scenery is so different. There are still rocks of different colors but their make up is different.
We decided that we would do one hike tomorrow and one on Saturday. We will see how true that is.
Our campground offers fresh baked muffins each morning and also dinner every night during the week.
