August 18, 2015 Hikes in Canyonlands NP and a trip to Dead Horse Point State Park

Tuesday, August 18, 2015 Hikes in Canyonlands  NP and a trip to Dead Horse Point State Park

Today was another early start so we could beat the heat.  Off to Canyonlands for a couple of hikes.   Our first hike was to Upheaval Dome.  This was almost a 2 mile hike.  This is a mystery to the geologists. They do not know if this was created by a meteor or a salt dome from an ancient sea.  The hike was considered to be moderate so we both got a workout from this hike some of it was pretty difficult.  After we finished with this hike we stopped at Green River Overlook and Orange Cliffs Overlook.  Next hike on the agenda was Grand View Point Overlook.  This was an easy hike but it was another 2 mile hike and the day was getting hotter.  We finished this hike without any issues and had 1 more that we wanted to do and that was to the Mesa Arch.  This was another easy hike but it was well worth it.  The arch was beautiful with a gorgeous view behind it.  Add another mile.  Our final stop for the day was at Dead Horse Point State Park.  This is actually called Utah’s Grand Canyon.  It is 2000 feet above the Colorado River.  The legend of Dead Horse Point was in the 1800’s cowboys used this to catch wild horses.  There are sheer cliffs on 3 sides and an access only 30 yards wide.  It was the perfect trap.

The only creatures that we saw today was a regular lizard and a whiptail lizard (its tail is 2.5 times longer that its body).  Everyone must have been in hiding in a very cool place.  Very productive day total miles hiked today 6.  Tomorrow is going to be a rest day as we leave on Thursday to see Capital Reef NP.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SISTER, IRENE.
